The Psalter

Psalm 112

The One Hundred Twelfth Psalm

Beatus vir.

BLESSED is the man that feareth the LORD; * he hath great delight in his commandments.

His seed shall be mighty upon earth; * the generation of the faithful shall be blessed.

Riches and plenteousness shall be in his house; * and his righteousness endureth for ever.

Unto the godly there ariseth up light in the darkness; * he is merciful, loving, and righteous.

A good man is merciful, and lendeth; * and will guide his words with discretion.

For he shall never be moved: * and the righteous shall be had in everlasting remembrance.

He will not be afraid of any evil tidings; * for his heart standeth fast, and believeth in the LORD.

His heart is stablished, and will not shrink, * until he see his desire upon his enemies.

He hath dispersed abroad, and given to the poor, * and his righteousness remaineth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.

The ungodly shall see it, and it shall grieve him; * he shall gnash with his teeth, and consume away; the desire of the ungodly shall perish.

Psalm 146

The One Hundred Forty Sixth Psalm

Lauda, anima mea.

PRAISE the LORD, O my soul: while I live, will I praise the LORD; * yea, as long as I have any being, I will sing praises unto my God.

O put not your trust in princes, nor in any child of man; * for there is no help in them.

For when the breath of man goeth forth, he shall turn again to his earth, * and then all his thoughts perish.

Blessed is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, * and whose hope is in the LORD his God:

Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that therein is; * who keepeth his promise for ever;

Who helpeth them to right that suffer wrong; * who feedeth the hungry.

The LORD looseth men out of prison; * the LORD giveth sight to the blind.

The LORD helpeth them that are fallen; * the LORD careth for the righteous.

The LORD careth for the strangers; he defendeth the fatherless and widow: * as for the way of the ungodly, he turneth it upside down.

The LORD thy God, O Sion, shall be King for ever-more, * and throughout all generations.

The First Lesson

Ecclesiasticus 31:3-11

The rich hath great labour in gathering riches together; and when he resteth, he is filled with his delicates. The poor laboureth in his poor estate; and when he leaveth off, he is still needy. He that loveth gold shall not be justified, and he that followeth corruption shall have enough thereof. Gold hath been the ruin of many, and their destruction was present. It is a stumblingblock unto them that sacrifice unto it, and every fool shall be taken therewith. Blessed is the rich that is found without blemish, and hath not gone after gold. Who is he? and we will call him blessed: for wonderful things hath he done among his people. Who hath been tried thereby, and found perfect? then let him glory. Who might offend, and hath not offended? or done evil, and hath not done it? His goods shall be established, and the congregation shall declare his alms.

The Second Lesson

Acts 4:32

And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus, Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet.

The Collect

St. Barnabas the Apostle

O LORD God Almighty, who didst endue thy holy Apostle Barnabas with singular gifts of the Holy Ghost; Leave us not, we beseech thee, destitute of thy manifold gifts, nor yet of grace to use them alway to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
