The Psalter

Psalm 33

The Thirty-Third Psalm

Exultate, justi.

REJOICE in the LORD, O ye righteous; * for it be-cometh well the just to be thankful.

Praise the LORD with harp; * sing praises unto him with the lute, and instrument of ten strings.

Sing unto the Lord a new song; * sing praises lustily unto him with a good courage.

For the word of the LORD is true; * and all his works are faithful.

He loveth righteousness and judgment; * the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.

By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; * and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

He gathereth the waters of the sea together, as it were upon an heap; * and layeth up the deep, as in a treasure-house.

Let all the earth fear the LORD: * stand in awe of him, all ye that dwell in the world.

For he spake, and it was done; * he commanded, and it stood fast.

The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought, * and maketh the devices of the people to be of none effect, and casteth out the counsels of princes.

The counsel of the LORD shall endure for ever, * and the thoughts of his heart from generation to generation.

Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord JEHOVAH; * and blessed are the folk that he hath chosen to him, to be his inheritance.

The LORD looketh down from heaven, and beholdeth all the children of men; * from the habitation of his dwelling, he considereth all them that dwell on the earth.

He fashioneth all the hearts of them, * and understandeth all their works.

There is no king that can be saved by the multitude of an host; * neither is any mighty man delivered by much strength.

A horse is counted but a vain thing to save a man; * neither shall he deliver any man by his great strength.

Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, * and upon them that put their trust in his mercy;

To deliver their soul from death, * and to feed them in the time of dearth.

Our soul hath patiently tarried for the LORD; * for he is our help and our shield.

For our heart shall rejoice in him; * because we have hoped in his holy Name.

Let thy merciful kindness, O LORD, be upon us, * like as we do put our trust in thee.

The First Lesson

Ecclesiasticus 19:20

The fear of the Lord is all wisdom; and in all wisdom is the performance of the law, and the knowledge of his omnipotency. If a servant say to his master, I will not do as it pleaseth thee; though afterward he do it, he angereth him that nourisheth him. The knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom, neither at any time the counsel of sinners prudence. There is a wickedness, and the same an abomination; and there is a fool wanting in wisdom. He that hath small understanding, and feareth God, is better than one that hath much wisdom, and transgresseth the law of the most High. There is an exquisite subtilty, and the same is unjust; and there is one that turneth aside to make judgment appear; and there is a wise man that justifieth in judgment. There is a wicked man that hangeth down his head sadly; but inwardly he is full of deceit, Casting down his countenance, and making as if he heard not: where he is not known, he will do thee a mischief before thou be aware. And if for want of power he be hindered from sinning, yet when he findeth opportunity he will do evil. A man may be known by his look, and one that hath understanding by his countenance, when thou meetest him. A man's attire, and excessive laughter, and gait, shew what he is.

The Second Lesson

St. Matthew 5:1-16

And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

The Collect

Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
