The Psalter

Psalm 13

The Thirteenth Psalm

Usquequo, Domine?

HOW long wilt thou forget me, O LORD; for ever? * how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?

How long shall I seek counsel in my soul, and be so vexed in my heart? * how long shall mine enemy triumph over me?

Consider, and hear me, O LORD my God; * lighten mine eyes, that I sleep not in death;

Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him: * for if I be cast down, they that trouble me will rejoice at it.

But my trust is in thy mercy, * and my heart is joyful in thy salvation.

I will sing of the LORD, because he hath dealt so lovingly with me; * yea, I will praise the Name of the Lord Most Highest.

Psalm 14

The Fourteenth Psalm

Dixit insipiens.

THE fool hath said in his heart, * There is no God.

They are corrupt, and become abominable in their doings; * there is none that doeth good, no not one.

The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, * to see if there were any that would understand, and seek after God.

But they are all gone out of the way, they are altogether become abominable; * there is none that doeth good, no not one.

Have they no knowledge, that they are all such workers of mischief, * eating up my people as it were bread, and call not upon the LORD?

There were they brought in great fear, even where no fear was; * for God is in the generation of the righteous.

As for you, ye have made a mock at the counsel of the poor; * because he putteth his trust in the LORD.

Who shall give salvation unto Israel out of Sion? * When the LORD turneth the captivity of his people, then shall Jacob rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

The First Lesson

Ecclesiastes 8:12 - 9:1

Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him: But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God. There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity. Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun. When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:) Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it. For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.

The Second Lesson

St. Matthew 23:1-12

Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

The Collect

Twenty-First Sunday after Trinity

GRANT, we beseech thee, merciful Lord, to thy faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins, and serve thee with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
