The Psalter

Psalm 139

The One Hundred Thirty Ninth Psalm

Domine, probasti.

O LORD, thou hast searched me out, and known me. * Thou knowest my down-sitting, and mine uprising; thou understandest my thoughts long before.

Thou art about my path, and about my bed; * and art acquainted with all my ways.

For lo, there is not a word in my tongue, * but thou, O LORD, knowest it altogether.

Thou hast beset me behind and before, * and laid thine hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful and excellent for me; * I cannot attain unto it.

Whither shall I go then from thy Spirit? * or whither shall I go then from thy presence?

If I climb up into heaven, thou art there; * if I go down to hell, thou art there also.

If I take the wings of the morning, * and remain in the uttermost parts of the sea;

Even there also shall thy hand lead me, * and thy right hand shall hold me.

If I say, Peradventure the darkness shall cover me; * then shall my night be turned to day.

Yea, the darkness is no darkness with thee, but the night is as clear as the day; * the darkness and light to thee are both alike.

For my reins are thine; * thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.

I will give thanks unto thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: * marvellous are thy works, and that my soul knoweth right well.

My bones are not hid from thee, * though I be made secretly, and fashioned beneath in the earth.

Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being imperfect; * and in thy book were all my members written;

Which day by day were fashioned, * when as yet there was none of them.

How dear are thy counsels unto me, O God; * O how great is the sum of them!

If I tell them, they are more in number than the sand: * when I wake up, I am present with thee.

Wilt thou not slay the wicked, O God? * Depart from me, ye blood-thirsty men.

For they speak unrighteously against thee; * and thine enemies take thy Name in vain.

Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? * and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?

Yea, I hate them right sore; * even as though they were mine enemies.

Try me, O God, and seek the ground of my heart; * prove me, and examine my thoughts.

Look well if there be any way of wickedness in me; * and lead me in the way everlasting.

The First Lesson

Jeremiah 32:36-42

And now therefore thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely: And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul. For thus saith the Lord; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.

The Second Lesson

St. John 12:44

Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

The Collect

Fifth Sunday in Lent (Passion Sunday)

WE beseech thee, Almighty God, mercifully to look upon thy people; that by thy great goodness they may be governed and preserved evermore, both in body and soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ash Wednesday

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
